Young Afghans talk about rapidly changing life under Taliban
"Living conditions are getting worse by the minute"
Hi ReligionUnplugged readers,
Our top stories this week delve into life in Afghanistan under the new Taliban rule and the dangers for Christians and Muslims alike.
Managing editor Meagan Clark spoke to young Afghans who have been left behind to contend with the Taliban’s rule. Many of them are secret converts to Christianity. They report that the Taliban has been going from house to house, at times asking who is Christian. They desperately want to flee, but as of now there’s no way out for many.
“They will kill me. They are checking every home,” Jalal, 21, told ReligionUnplugged. “Please help me get out of this country.”
In opinion, senior fellow for international religious freedom Lela Gilbert writes on the abuse and religious persecution of the Taliban. Muslim women and children are being denied access to stores, schools and medical clinics. There have also been threats to turn unmarried women — and perhaps even young girls — over to the Taliban for enslavement and marriage.
She asks, “Why has the United States of America handed over the country of Afghanistan to an ISIS-like terrorist organization?”
Also listen to our podcast this week featuring Executive Editor Paul Glader interviewing a veteran whose faith helped him through PTSD after combat in Afghanistan. He now helps homeless vets in Orange County, California.
See you next week.
