The Hollywood movie that finally cracks the faith-based drama
✈️ Our review of 'On a Wing and a Prayer'
Hi ReligionUnplugged readers,
The Amazon Studios produced faith-based drama “On a Wing and a Prayer” released on April 7 — and our contributing critic Joseph Holmes called it “one of the best” of its genre.
He breaks it down like this:
Many faith-based films are made by independent filmmakers.
In fact, there’s a small industry of faith-based filmmakers hoping to replicate the financial and cultural success of movies like “Fireproof” and “Facing the Giants.”
Hollywood at large rarely includes faith in their movies, but they’ve also recognized the religious audience and try to cash in on it.
However, success stories are rare for both sides. Often, faith-based filmmakers lack the budget or technical skills to make a good movie, and Hollywood films lack a genuine understanding and representation of faith. “On a Wing and a Prayer” — which is Hollywood made — breaks the mold, according to Holmes.
“Every moment of faith was connected to some emotion or experience that anyone could relate to, and the fact that they reacted to it with faith so naturally was simply a reflection of their values. Frankly, it reminded me a lot of my own family,” he writes.
The movie has the added benefit of being based on a true story, in which passenger Doug White safely lands a plane after the pilot dies mid-flight, saving his family in the process. ReligionUnplugged colleague Calvin Cockrell spoke to the Whites about their experience and how they believe God saved them on the plane that day.
Those who know the family also say Dennis Quaid’s portrayal of Doug in the movie is “absolutely eerie.”
This week, check out our review and more — and if you’ve seen the movie, let us know what you think!

Nigerian Elections Halt Flights: An Adventure Filled With Faith And Financial Woes
(PERSONAL ESSAY) It was as if I faced what we call in development economics a “false paradigm.” A few days before leaving my home country, every stop I took at a bank around my place of residence as well as at the O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa, I felt I was wrongly advised by the forex department to not carry cash on hand for safety precautions. They, however, did not perceive the current naira scarcity saga that has affected millions of Nigerians — Christians, churches, nonbelievers, the rich and the poor. by Vicky Abraham
