In India, students are policed for screening banned documentary
The documentary criticizes Hindu PM Narendra Modi
Hi ReligionUnplugged readers,
A BBC documentary titled “India: The Modi Question” aired beginning on January 17. The two-part series explores Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s relationship with India’s Muslim minority; it also discusses his role in the 2002 riots in Gujarat.
India’s government, which is calling the documentary “a propaganda piece,” banned it from the country, but many university students have hosted screenings on their campuses. The documentary is also being shared through social media and on Google Drive.
Students have also faced pushback from police for screening the documentary; students describe having their campus power forcefully shut off and others throwing rocks at them.
“The more they will ban the documentary, the more we will screen it,” said 23-year-old Kainat, a psychology student.
